More and more retailers from Frankfurt, Hanau, Offenbach and Wiesbaden sell online in addition to their physical shop. Shopify is often the first choice: quick to set up, low-maintenance and with everything you need for mail order. But is it really worth it for you? Here are the pros and cons, the costs and the typical pitfalls in Germany.

The advantages of Shopify for retailers

  • Quick start: a professional shop can be online in a few weeks.
  • Low maintenance: Shopify takes care of hosting, security and updates.
  • Sell everywhere: online shop, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Google and, if you like, a point-of-sale system in your shop, all from one back end.
  • Scalable: from the first product to international shipping.
  • Strong app ecosystem: reviews, upsells, subscriptions, newsletters and more.

The disadvantages, honestly

  • Ongoing costs: subscription, apps and, depending on the payment method, fees per transaction.
  • Dependency: your shop runs on Shopify's platform. Shopify sets the rules and prices.
  • Checkout limits: very individual processes are harder to implement than with WooCommerce.
  • The app trap: every app costs extra. Without a plan, costs add up quickly.

What does Shopify cost per month?

The ongoing costs are made up of the Shopify plan (depending on the scope of features), payment fees (per transaction with Shopify Payments, plus a Shopify fee depending on the plan with external providers) and apps. For a small to medium-sized shop you should realistically plan for a low three-figure amount per month including apps. You can find current plans directly at Shopify.

Having an agency set it up is a one-off investment. At 22nd Avenue, professionally set up Shopify shops start at €1,990 (up to 10 products, up to 3 pages).

Pitfalls in Germany

Shopify is an international system. For the German market, a few additional things need attention:

  1. Legal texts: legal notice, terms, cancellation policy and privacy policy should come from a specialised provider and be updated automatically.
  2. Price information: unit prices (e.g. per 100 ml), VAT notices and shipping costs must be displayed correctly.
  3. Cookie consent: tracking pixels and many apps set cookies. Proper consent is mandatory.
  4. Accessibility (BFSG): in many cases Shopify shops also have to be accessible. This depends heavily on the chosen theme and apps.
  5. Taxes & shipping: clarify correct tax rates, EU shipping and, if applicable, the OSS procedure with your tax adviser.

Online + shop: the best of both worlds

For retailers in the Rhine-Main region in particular, the combination is exciting: customers discover products on Instagram, buy online or pick them up in the shop in Frankfurt or Hanau. With local social media videos and local SEO you reach customers from the region in a targeted way. More on this in our article on UGC videos.

A practical example

For Dental Beauty we built a Shopify shop for teeth whitening kits, including packaging design and UGC videos that bring visitors to the shop. Shop, product and content come from one team, which saves coordination and ensures a consistent brand presence.

Buy a theme, adapt it or develop a custom one?

Shopify shops are based on themes. There are free and paid themes in the Theme Store. For most retailers, a high-quality premium theme adapted to their own brand is the best route: proven technology, good loading times and still a distinctive look. A completely custom theme only pays off for special requirements or large brands.

When choosing a theme, pay attention to loading time, accessibility, good product page layouts and regular updates by the developer.

The most important app categories for the start

  • Legal texts for legal notice, terms, cancellation policy and privacy policy
  • Cookie consent as soon as tracking or marketing pixels are involved
  • Reviews for products and the shop
  • Email marketing for newsletters and abandoned cart reminders
  • Shipping for labels and shipment tracking

Our recommendation: start with as few apps as possible and only add what demonstrably brings revenue.

Click & collect and local delivery

For retailers with a shop in Frankfurt, Hanau or Offenbach this is a real advantage: customers order online and pick up in the shop, or you deliver locally yourself. Shopify supports both. This way you combine the reach of online retail with the proximity of your shop, and many customers buy something extra when they pick up.

Checklist for the Shopify launch

  1. Legal texts integrated and checkout checked
  2. Payment methods tested (including a test order)
  3. Shipping profiles and tax rates correct
  4. Domain connected, SSL active
  5. Google Merchant Center and Search Console set up
  6. Product images compressed, alt texts maintained
  7. Confirmation emails in your brand style
  8. Cookie consent and tracking configured properly

Your own shop or a marketplace like Amazon and Etsy?

Marketplaces bring immediate reach, but at a price: commissions, tough price comparisons, little brand impact and hardly any access to customer data. Your own Shopify shop is your own shop window: you decide on design, prices and communication, and every customer becomes your customer who comes back via the newsletter.

For many retailers the combination is ideal: marketplaces as an additional sales channel, your own shop as the centre of the brand. Shopify can be connected to various marketplaces and social media channels so that products and stock are managed centrally.
